Prof. Tao Attends the International Conference for Jointly Building the “Belt and Road”

On November 22 through 24, the “Jointly Building the “Belt and Road”: International Conference on Leading High-quality Development of Sino-Foreign Cooperation and Opening up a New Path for Shaanxi to the Outside World” was co-hosted by the Institute of Latin American Studies (ILAS) of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) and Northwest University in Xi’an City, Shaanxi Province. Director Tao Yitao was invited to attend the conference and delivered a keynote speech.
A glimpse of the meeting
More than 200 experts, scholars and young students from institutions such as the ILAS-CASS, the Institute of Russian, Eastern European & Central Asian Studies, CASS, the Institute of West-Asian and African Studies, CASS, the American Communication Center of China Foreign Languages Publishing Administration, the Institute of Latin American Studies of China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR), China Merchants Port Group Co., Ltd., the Argentina Strategic Dialogue Foundation, the Institute of American and Oceania Studies, Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation (CAITEC), and the Shaanxi Institute of International Studies, and universities such as Nankai University, Northwest University, Shenzhen University, City University of Macau, University of International Business and Economics, Shaanxi Normal University, and Shandong University of Technology attended the conference.
In the first phase of keynote speeches held on November 23, a number of experts and scholars delivered keynote speeches, including Zhang Tuo, former Chinese Ambassador to Cuba, Bolivia, Argentina and Venezuela, Professor Tao Yitao, Director of China Center for Special Economic Zone Research (CCSEZR), Shenzhen University (SZU) and President of the Belt and Road Research Institute (Shenzhen) for International Cooperation and Development (BRRI), and Li Yafang, Director of the American Communication Center of China Foreign Languages Publishing Administration. Prof. Ma Lili, Dean of School of Economics & Management Northwest University, presided over this phase.
Prof. Tao pointed out that in order to maintain the rise of China in the world for the long term, we must first embrace a world of common prosperity in China. China needs to find the minimum standard with which the world can accept its rise, and in the meantime find the highest level of consensus, domestically, on accepting the world, thereby creating a more favorable external environment for China's future development.

Two breakout sessions were also held in the conference, namely the Latin American panel and the European-Asian panel. The Latin American panel comprises “Cooperation Between China and Latin America across the Pacific” and “The 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road and Shaanxi’s Opening-up”. The European-Asian panel comprises “China and Eurasia Under the Reshaped International Economic Order” and “Silk Road Economic Belt and Shaanxi’s Opening-up”.
At the important historical moment of the 10th anniversary of the “Belt and Road” initiative, well-known experts and scholars in the field of international relations and economic and trade cooperation gathered together to discuss topics related to the “Belt and Road” cooperation and Shaanxi’s opening-up. The intellectual sparks and exchange of views not only help make up for the shortcomings of Shaanxi’s opening-up, but also have important theoretical value and practical significance in promoting the international cooperation of the “Belt and Road”. During the conference, the ILAS-CASS also reached a preliminary intention with the CCSEZR and the BRRI on cooperation to promote the implementation of the “Belt and Road” initiative in Latin America.
